Scholars chat at Chevening Farewell 2016

1,800 Chevening Scholars gathered at London’s iconic Alexandra Palace on Monday, 11 July to celebrate a successful year as part of the programme. It was a chance for scholars to say goodbye to one another, commemorate a year of study and cultural activities in the UK, and also to open up new opportunities as the scholars transition into the global Chevening Alumni network. They were joined by Chevening Alumni, representatives from partner organisations, and staff from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and the Chevening Secretariat. Read more

As part of the 'Best of British presents…’ series, Chevening Scholars received a lesson in Northern Ireland’s politics and history at Stormont, before getting a chance to explore two of its most famous sites—Giant’s Causeway and the Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge—thanks to Queen’s University Belfast and Ulster University. Volunteering at Oxfam

As part of Volunteers’ Week 2016, 20 Chevening Scholars lent a hand at Oxfam’s Southern Logistics Centre in Milton Keynes. Oxfam is an international organisation that works with partners and local communities in more than 90 countries to help end poverty through various initiatives, including the sale of donated goods on Oxfam's Online Shop. The scholars were given a brief orientation before being split into small groups. They then spent the day sorting and taking photographs of the stock, and helping to place listings online. Read more

Sandra at Fukushima Prefecture

From 8 to 15 March 2016, Chevening Scholar Sandra Camacho Otero visited the Fukushima Prefecture in Japan as part of a select University College London (UCL) delegation. The delegation, which included six scholars from UCL’s Institute for Risk and Disaster Reduction, was on site to explore the current state of reconstruction in the area, five years after the Tōhoku earthquake, and subsequent tsunami that led to the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident. We are delighted to announce that Chevening Scholar, Yasir Mehdi, was the recipient of a 2016 ‘Enriching Student Life Award’. Commonly known as ELSAs they are awarded by Cardiff University Student Union (CUSU) to acknowledge the students and staff who have contributed to enriching the university campus. Yasir was one of four students shortlisted for his particular category. Read more
