Lift off for new Icelandic space scholarship
2022 will see the launch of the Chevening - UKSA Iceland STEM Scholarship with thanks to the UK Space agency and Iceland’s Ministry of Education, Science and Culture.
This is an exciting opportunity for an Icelandic applicant to receive a fully-funded Chevening Scholarship to study a STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths)-related subject at a UK university.
The award has been made possible thanks to a partnership with Iceland’s Ministry of Education, Science and Culture, as well as three space exploration companies: Orbex Ltd, Sykora Ltd and Virgin Orbit UK Ltd. These organisations are represented by the UK Space Agency.
Together, the funding parties are committed to supporting collaboration between Iceland and the UK in research, innovation and technology.
Dr Bryony Mathew, British Ambassador to Iceland, said: “This new partnership creates a fantastic opportunity for Icelanders to study at some of the best universities in the world.
“Not only can Chevening Scholars expect an unparalleled academic experience in the UK, but be empowered by the knowledge, skills and confidence they will gain as part of this scholarship programme. I encourage all Icelanders that meet the criteria to apply before applications close on 2 November.”
Ian Annett, Deputy CEO, UK Space Agency said: “We are working closely with Iceland to strengthen existing partnerships and cooperation between our two countries in space, research and student mobility.
“This new agreement will give talented young people from Iceland a superb opportunity to study in the UK and be part of our exciting new spaceflight industry, as we work to deliver on the ambitions set out in the National Space Strategy.”
