Being part of the Chevening community at Durham University was a tremendous privilege.
Since 2015, Durham University captivated me with its impressive range of study programmes and international reputation. The beautiful surroundings and landscapes further solidified my desire to be a part of this remarkable institution.
Studying at Durham University surpassed all my expectations. Every day, I enjoyed exploring its enchanting paths, finding new shortcuts to classes, and learning from experienced professors. Interacting with international classmates provided valuable insights and perspectives, expanding my horizons. The relationships formed at Ustinov College gave me a broader worldview and lifelong friendships, transcending language and cultural barriers.
This experience has had a profound impact on my life. From the initial challenge of becoming a Durham student and Chevener in 2015 to the exhilarating moment when my name was mentioned in the cathedral by the vice-chancellor, I felt immense joy, gratitude, and fulfilment. However, I see this journey as just the beginning. The knowledge, experiences, and perspectives gained must be shared, aligning with the mission of Chevening.
I am determined to promote similar opportunities in my home country, empowering Mexican educators to develop global competencies and make a meaningful impact in their communities.
Currently, I work at an Escuela Normal in Mexico, specialising in training teachers. Through international collaborations and the development of English as an Additional Language, I strive to create equal global opportunities. My practical research explores the intersection of additional languages and the international experience, with a particular focus on the role of critical interculturalization.
Studying in the UK with a Chevening Scholarship has provided me with invaluable global and social competencies, as well as an extensive international network. This has enabled me to propose innovative internationalisation strategies and collaborations at the Ministry of Education in my home country.
To future international students, I wholeheartedly recommend making the most of your time at Durham. Immerse yourself in the vibrant community, participate in events, volunteer, engage with fellow students, and embrace the diversity that Durham offers. The transformative journey allows for tremendous personal growth, drawing from the richness of the Durham community and its serene natural surroundings.
I am deeply grateful to Ustinov College and Durham University for fostering a strong sense of community and equipping me with the tools to overcome academic challenges. Their understanding, support, and shared sense of belonging have been invaluable.
My experience as a Chevener at Durham University has undoubtedly been life-changing, and it will be treasured forever in my heart.
