Current Chevening Scholar and Social Media Ambassador Mikheil Goguadze shares his top tips for staying physically and mentally healthy over the colder months.
It’s true, winter brings dark days, heavy readings, and lots of essays and exams. But hold on, there’s no need to let stress take over!
In this blog, I will share my top five tips for maintaining mental and physical wellbeing as a Chevening Scholar in the UK.
1. Spend quality time in nature
Fortunately there are a bunch of green spaces in the UK, which, for me, have been key to staying physically and mentally healthy.
To be honest, you won’t catch me in a gym. I’ve discovered that I prefer the joy of a daily walk in the park. It helps me to think and also gives me the opportunity to interact with people on the street, who always smile and make me feel part of the community.
In addition, running has become a daily ritual. I visit different parks at least three times a week. On those days when I feel exhausted, I run in front of my house. Consistency is the key.
2. Surround yourself with positive energy
For a healthy mind, we need to create a positive atmosphere and surround ourselves with people who we respect and admire.
My recommendation is to break out of your shell, make new friends, and explore vibrant public spaces: museums, galleries, pubs, cafes, parks—you name it! Just remember to leave your comfort zone, break the ice, and strike up conversations with people around you. You’ll be surprised to find a lot in common with people you’ve never met!
Throughout my time in the UK, I’ve met lots of cool people from all over the world. We support each other on tough days, but also party and celebrate together. It’s always important to have people who will cheer you on!
3. Get a good night’s sleep
As Chevening Scholars, we’ve come to the UK from many different parts of the world. At first, it can be challenging to fit into a sleep routine, but it’s worth investing in it and getting into the habit of sleeping well.
Quality sleep is essential for hard-working people like you!
4. Experience new things
Travelling around the UK is an absolute must during your Chevening year!
Yes, winter might bring a chill, but trust me, the magic lies in exploring the neighbouring towns and villages of your host city. For instance, if you live in London, it’s great to visit Cambridge, Oxford, Brighton, and Bath.
I travel at least once a month. And here’s a personal touch: I come from a city in Georgia which is close to the Black Sea. The first time I saw the beach, the waves, and seagulls in Brighton, I felt a burst of energy and almost cried.
Whether you go alone or with your friends, the experience is simply amazing. So bundle up in your warm winter clothes, set out on the road, and let the UK reveal its hidden gems to you. You never know what amazing sights, fresh energy, and unforgettable memories might be waiting for you.
5. Ask for help
Last but not least, remember to make use of your university’s wellbeing services. They will be there to support you with a range of issues.
And if you need any kind of professional help, book an appointment and speak to a specialist. You can contact your GP but be mindful there may be a long waiting list.
Finally, don’t forget your Chevening family. Feeling stressed, anxious, or isolated is okay, however please don’t struggle alone! Never hesitate to ask for support.
