Spring is unfolding it vibrant colours across the UK, and there’s no better time for Chevening Scholars to get out and about to explore everything the UK has to offer with their fellow Cheveners.
We’ve collated the top 10 activities from our 40th Anniversary Bucket List to help our scholars make the most of springtime:
Try a classic British ‘sarnie’
Dive into British culinary culture by indulging in a ‘sarnie’— which is basically a fancy word for a sandwich! Head to a quaint café or local bakery and ask for a classic like a Ploughman’s or a Coronation chicken sandwich.
Spend a day at a UK castle
Transport yourself back in time by exploring one of the UK’s stunning castles. Search for castles near you, whether it’s the regal beauty of Windsor Castle, the medieval splendor of Warwick Castle, or the fairy-tale charm of Stirling Castle in Scotland.
Recreate an iconic UK photo
Channel your inner creativity and recreate an iconic British photo with fellow scholars. Visit Abbey Road in London to capture your version of The Beatles’ world-famous album cover, or pose with the iconic red telephone booths that dot the streets of Britain.
Get caught in April showers
There’s nothing more British than a springtime rain shower! Embrace the unpredictable weather – maybe you could even try dancing in the rain without an umbrella!
Find an picturesque study spot
Challenge yourself to see whether you can find the most aesthetic study spot at your university. Whether it’s a cosy corner in the library overlooking a courtyard or a peaceful bench beside a rushing river, let the beauty of your surroundings inspire your academic endeavors.
Bake a traditional cake
Channel your inner baker and whip up a traditional British cake. Try your hand at baking a classic Victoria sponge or a hearty fruitcake, and share your culinary creations with fellow Cheveners.
Organise a Chevening university meet-up
Why not foster new Chevening connections by organising a meetup with fellow Chevening Scholars at your university? Whether it’s a study session, a day trip, or simply a coffee, sharing your Chevening experience is always a positive.
Enjoy an afternoon tea
Indulge in the timeless British tradition of afternoon tea at a quaint tea room or even at your student accommodation. Treat yourself to delicate sandwiches, freshly baked scones with clotted cream and jam, and a selection of exquisite teas – all served with charm and sophistication of course!
Visit a local market
Immerse yourself in the vibrant atmosphere of a local market and experience their bustling energy. Explore a local farmer’s market or visit the eclectic stalls of Borough Market in London, the artisanal delights of St. Nicholas Market in Bristol, or the cultural treasures of St. George’s Market in Belfast.
Picnic with fellow Cheveners
If you’re lucky enough to find a sunny day, there’s no better way to spend a study break than picnicking in the park with friends. Why not reach out to fellow scholars to see if they want to join?
We hope you enjoy this new season blooming across the UK! Don’t forget to share your experiences on social media with the hashtag #40YearsOfChevening.
