For our current cohort of scholars, their time in the UK is coming to an end, but the memories they've made will last forever. Chevening Scholar and Social Media Ambassador (SMA) Esty Nadya Rafyanti shares her rollercoaster experience studying at London School of Economics (LSE).
Embarking on a Chevening journey has been an extraordinary chapter of my life, filled with unique experiences and core memories. Buckle up, folks! Let me explain what has made this experience so special…
Witnessing the Northern Lights in London!
Yes, you read that right! Seeing the northern lights in London was an unexpected and magical experience. One evening, as I opened the door to my house, there it was – the sky lit up with the breathtaking colors of the northern lights. It was a rare and special occasion, and I couldn’t believe my luck. I owe this unforgettable moment to Chevening for giving me the chance to be in the right place at the right time, surrounded by the best people to share it with.
Geeking Out at Ofcom with My Department at LSE
As someone who works in the government sector back in my home country, visiting OFCOM (the Office of Communications), the UK’s regulator for the communications services, with my department at the London School of Economics (LSE) was incredibly relatable and insightful. It was fascinating to see how regulatory bodies operate in the UK and compare them with the systems back home. This experience broadened my perspective and deepened my understanding of regulatory practices and media governance.
UK Adventures – Embracing My Main Character Energy
Growing up, I always dreamed of exploring the picturesque landscapes and historic cities of the UK that I had only seen on screen. Thanks to Chevening, I got to live out this dream. From the fairytale-like English houses in Castle Combe and Jane Austen’s historic charm in Bath to the vibrant energy of Liverpool and the magical Harry Potter vibes of Edinburgh, every trip was an adventure. I felt like the main character in a movie, living out scenes I had long imagined.
Seasons of Magic: My First Winter and Autumn
Coming from a tropical country, experiencing winter and autumn for the first time was nothing short of magical. I was like a kid in a candy store, marveling at the changing colors of the leaves, the crisp air, and those stunning sunrises and sunsets. The constantly changing times of sunrise and sunset were wild to me – something I’d never experienced back home. And let’s not forget Winter Wonderland – I braved one of those super tall rides in freezing temperatures! These seasons have left an indelible mark on my heart, creating core memories that I will cherish forever.
Lancaster House: A Red-Carpet Moment All the Way
One of the highlights of my Chevening journey was being invited to Lancaster House as a Chevening Social Media Ambassador. It was
an honour to represent Chevening Scholars and share my experiences with a wider audience. The event itself was a grand
affair, filled with inspiring conversations and networking opportunities that further enriched my experience.
‘….Birds of a feather, we should stick together, I know…..’
While everyone talks about childhood friends, not enough is said about the incredible friendships and connections you make in your 20s, far from home, while surviving studying abroad. Chevening has given me those! A global network of friends, family, and soulmates who have become my support system. Moreover, being a Chevening SMA felt like being a friendship ambassador. I was always excited about meeting up, catching up, and strolling around London with other Cheveners. These relationships have made my time in London even more special, and I know they will last a lifetime. Well, I’ll love you ’til the day that I dieeeeeee!
Chevening, what a one-year-rollercoaster ride it has been! Talking about this past year feels endless, like I’m in the pilot season as the main character of a new series. Every aspect of this journey has been enriching and transformative. I can’t wait to see where my next journey will take me!
