‘Life after Chevening at the University of Dundee’
Wondering where a Chevening Scholarship could take you? Lina Tjindra reflects on what it was like to complete her master’s at the University of Dundee and all that she has achieved since.
If you've been chosen for Chevening, you may feel a little uncertain of what lies ahead. But don’t worry! We’ve asked Chevening Scholar and MBA student, Osamah Alghuweel, to give us their insight into what it’s like to be an international student at the University of Surrey.
Many international students are surprised by the UK’s cultural diversity and dynamic academic environment. The informal interactions with your professors with an emphasis on critical thinking and independent learning can be quite different from the educational norms in your home country. This can be a little unsettling but there is an abundance of support available to help you settle into your new home.
Before arriving in the UK, your programme team at the University of Surrey will already be contact with you. They will share important information about your accommodation, visa, programme structure and timetable, and an induction schedule to help you feel confident and prepared to make the journey to the UK.
The first few weeks at the University are filled with orientation sessions, introductory lectures and social events designed to help students acclimatise to the academic environment and connect with their peers. You’ll be allocated a personal tutor to provide both academic and personal support throughout your time at university.
“The University of Surrey community was incredibly welcoming. I had access to comprehensive services, including the International Student Support team and the Hive, which offered advice on everything from legal paperwork to personal well-being. The University’s mentoring programmes and active Students’ Union also played a significant role in helping me feel at home.
Surrey Business School and the MBA team provided extensive support to help me settle in. From day one, they offered tailored orientation programmes that addressed both academic and practical aspects of living in the UK. They also provided regular check-ins, ensuring that I was coping well with the new environment. Dedicated support for international students, such as language assistance and career support, helped me navigate the initial challenges smoothly.
In addition, students on the MBA have access to a dedicated careers consultant. An overview of the career-related support is typically presented during the welcome week.”
“My best advice to settle in would be to actively participate in as many university-organised events as possible. These events are not just about fun and entertainment. They are also a great way to meet new people, make friends, and feel like a part of the community. Engaging in clubs and societies is also a great way to meet new people with similar interests. Additionally, don’t hesitate to reach out for support from university services if you’re feeling overwhelmed. Everyone at the University of Surrey is there to help you succeed, both academically and personally.”
Overall, the University of Surrey is known to be one of the most culturally diverse universities in the UK and has more than 5,000 international students coming from over 140 countries in the world. It is an environment determined to see international students thrive and leave their studies reminiscing on the journey of a lifetime!
