Last October, Sifu Albert Law of Wan Kam Leung Practical Wing Chun travelled from Hong Kong to Beijing to instruct Chevening Alumni and applicants on how to use the art of Wing Chun for self-defence.
Self-defence is a countermeasure that involves defending the health and well-being of oneself or others from harm. Most countries have the right of self-defence written into their legal systems. For instance Article 20, Paragraph 1, of the Criminal Code People’s Republic of China states: ‘In order to prevent the unlawful infringement of the state, the public interest, the personal, property and other rights of oneself or others from the ongoing unlawful infringement and to cause damage to the illegal infringer, one may utilise legitimate self defense and not incur criminal responsibility for such defences.’
Wing Chun is a martial art that uses narrow stances and short distances to fight with ferocity. It is excellent for self-defence, and can also be used to strengthen one’s body and improve fitness. Organised by the British embassy in Beijing, Chevening Alumni and applicants alike were treated to a lesson in this art form and equipped with new knowledge relating to self-defence.
Many thanks to Sifu Law for his instruction, and to Beijing’s Quanshilianmeng for use of their gym for this event. Thanks and congratulations also to all those who took part in this exciting event.
