In the spotlight: The Lake District

If picturesque scenery is what you’re looking for, this month’s ‘in the spotlight’ is definitely for you. Programme officer Marzana Khanom has written for us about one the UK’s most beautiful areas.

The Lake District is a mountainous region of England best known for its picturesque beauty, made up of lakes, forests, mountains and quintessentially English villages. The Lake District National Park covers nearly all of the Lake District and is the most visited national park in the UK.

There’s lots to see and do in the Lake District, but a tour of ‘the Lakes’ is not complete without climbing a mountain; a popular choice is the ‘Catbells’ mountain. This mountain is modest in stature but a favourite as people feel compelled to climb it due to its distinctive shape.

You don’t need to be a keen mountaineer to climb this one as families complete the hike with children and enthusiastic dogs! A hike to the top of this mountain is rewarded with a view of Derwentwater, one of the many bodies of water in the Lake District, surrounded by stunning greenery and mountains.

If mountain climbing isn’t your thing, there are some beautiful towns and villages you can visit too. The busy tourist town of Keswick is a must-see in the Lake District. It’s near a miniature ‘Stonehenge’ called the Castlerigg Stone Circle which is one of the most visually impressive prehistoric monuments in the UK.

Within the Lake District, outdoor activities such as sailing, walking, mountain-biking and climbing are very popular. It is a place which has something for everyone, but for me, one of the most enduring aspects of the Lake District is the friendly and welcoming locals who are both proud and keen to show off their area.
