The first eight Chevening Standard Chartered Financial Services Fellows were welcomed to the UK at a reception held at their host institution, King’s College London (KCL).
The fellowship, which is open to mid-career Indian professionals with a background in finance, seeks to builds expertise in areas such as risk management, actuarial sciences, investment management, and financial regulation. In doing so, it aims to promote cross-border cooperation between India and the UK by sharing best practices and developing a mutual appreciation of regulatory systems.
Standard Chartered is one of the largest foreign banks in India. Richard Chenga-Reddy, Global Head of Regulatory Affairs at a Standard Chartered, said of the partnership:
‘We are very proud to be supporting the Chevening Standard Chartered Financial Services Leadership Programme. I was delighted to have the opportunity to meet the first group of fellows as they embarked on the impressive programme developed by King’s College London on behalf of the UK Government. I am confident that the fellows will enhance their skills and experience which will ultimately benefit India’s fast-growing financial services industry.’
‘Personal transformation’
Executive Dean of Social Science and Public Policy at KCL Professor Frans Berkhout formally welcomed the fellows to the historic university, whilst emphasising the benefits that professional development programmes can bring:
‘This programme enables fellows to step out of their work lives and both reflect and work on themselves, including their soft skills’.
Having met Chevening Fellows on other programmes at the university, Professor Berkhout spoke about his desire for these eight weeks to bring about more than just professional and academic advancement:
‘I think you need to be open to the personal transformation that may happen to you whilst you are here, and I hope that at King’s we create a permissive and supportive academic environment to explore the emotional and other sides of learning too’.
The reception was held in the historic King’s Building which was constructed in 1831 on the north bank of the River Thames, and was the university’s founding building.
