How to choose your university accommodation: Tips from a University of Warwick student and Chevening scholar

As an international student, finding your home away from home can make a big difference to your overall university experience. Chevening scholar and University of Warwick student Itumeleng Sebeho shares his advice on how to choose the perfect university accommodation.

The University of Warwick is a leading UK university, quickly establishing an international reputation for excellence and consistently listed in the UK’s Top 10 universities. The residences on their campus offer a wide range of choice to meet different budgets and needs, with something to suit every Chevening scholar.

Choosing my accommodation at the University of Warwick

‘Most universities offer a range of different accommodation options to suit different needs and budgets.’

‘I decided that I wanted to stay on campus, and luckily at Warwick there are nine different campus housing options for postgraduates! I chose the Lakeside Village, which is known for its amazing tranquility. I have an ensuite bedroom with communal kitchen and dining area. This has been a great way to make friends, learn more about different foods and cultures, and save money.’

‘Living on campus is also very convenient. It is a short five-minute walk to my lectures at Warwick Manufacturing Group. And there are so many places on campus to eat, relax, and meet up with your friends. I like to be near to the university library but also benefit from having my own desk in my study bedroom. It is also great to have all of my bills included and to know that I have reliable wi-fi.’

My experience living abroad

‘At first, coming to university and living away from home felt very daunting, however it has been a great opportunity to gain some independence and develop my life skills.’

‘It has helped me to learn more about budgeting, cooking, communicating with others, and looking after myself.’

What to consider when choosing where to live

‘I would recommend that you do your research. Be sure to search using a reputable tool or take a personal recommendation. Warwick, like many other universities, uses StudentPad where landlords can be checked before they list their properties on the site. You also know that the properties available are suitable for students. To help with your search, you can apply filters such as location, length of agreement, and whether or not bills are included.’

‘Current students, alumni, and staff can be a great source of information. Try and attend an offer holder event or pre-departure briefing as these are excellent opportunities to meet other students planning to attend your university and to get advice from those who know the local area well.’

Advice for students on a tight budget

‘Firstly, work out your budget and secondly check what is included within each of the accommodation options and what is extra.  If you’re on a tighter budget, a private bedroom with shared bathroom and kitchen facilities for a large group of students will be the most cost-effective option. As the prices increase, the number of people you are sharing with decreases so if you want, or need, more private space, there are bedrooms with private bathrooms and kitchens limited to just a handful of people. This feels more like living in a family.’

‘Accommodation is often in high demand so book as soon as you can to give you the most options.’

Moving into student accommodation

‘Ultimately, it’s important you find somewhere you’ll feel comfortable and able to make a home away from home for the year you’re studying, so take the time to research and plan.’

When you move in, embrace the process of turning your new flat mates from strangers into friends. Be generous with your time, share your skills and your culture, and be open to learning.
