A Chevening Scholar’s guide to staying healthy over winter

From trying new foods to embracing new traditions, current Chevening Scholar and Social Media Ambassador (SMA) María José Ruiz Rodríguez shares what it was like to celebrate the festive season in the UK.
For me, the festive season commenced amid the company of friends. It was marked by abundant laughter, and, of course, my first encounter with the icy temperatures of winter.
As is customary in the UK, the start of December coincides with the onset of examinations and essay submissions, necessitating a careful balancing act between exciting celebration and relentless study. But despite my demanding schedule, I was able to fit a lot in.
Among the most enriching experiences was gaining an appreciation for the diverse cultural approaches to holiday celebrations. I came to realize that several countries, in accordance with their religious practices, either do not observe the same holidays or commemorate them on distinct dates unique to their regions.
For instance, in countries such as Taiwan and Thailand, Christmas Eve is not celebrated in the same manner as in Latin America, where the key dates include Christmas Eve (complete with family gift exchanges), New Year’s Eve, and Three Kings’ Day. Additionally, certain countries have unique observances. For example, Candle Day holds significance in Colombia, so on this day, I invited my flatmates to join me in lighting a candle and sharing a wish and intention for 2024.
Moreover, it was a special delight to sample a diverse array of foods and beverages and immerse myself in the enchanting atmosphere of UK Christmas markets.
In many cities, local vendors set up charming huts reminiscent of storybook scenes, evoking the quintessential Christmas movie experience. These markets offer an array of delectable treats, from hot chocolate to sweets, and even local liqueurs, which were entirely novel to me.
Inspired by this, my flatmates and I decided to create our own mulled wine, a beverage not typically found in our home countries. This delightful concoction, infused with copious amounts of cinnamon, hints of orange, a touch of honey, and red wine, proved to be the perfect antidote to the winter chill. I wholeheartedly recommend it!
As for the special occasions, I spent them in the company of friends. We each shared our unique experiences and traditions from our respective families and marvelled at the breathtaking fireworks displays that are a hallmark of the UK’s festivities.
Undoubtedly, in the coming years, I shall prepare mince pies with custard for my family in Colombia to enjoy, and I will complement these treats with a steaming mug of mulled wine.
I extend my warm wishes to everyone for an extraordinary 2024. May you pursue your dreams and make each day even better than the last!
