When I first arrived in Bangor, Wales, as a Chevening scholar, it was late at night and so I didn’t get the chance to see all that much, but that was all about to change. I’ve spent the last few months not only exploring Wales but the wider UK, taking the opportunity to immerse myself in its history and culture.

A welsh introduction

When I first arrived, the trip from Manchester to Bangor was certainly an experience- with bilingual language on the train! It was the first time I had heard Welsh, and it was fascinating to discover a new language and culture. The following morning, I was amazed by the beauty of the area and how everything was written in both English and Welsh. At that moment, I realized what a great choice I had made.

The first day I learnt how to say, ‘Bore da’ which means good morning in Welsh!

Here, I’ll be sharing my story and travels across the UK, including locations on the Chevening bucket list!

Exploring cities across the UK

Since arriving in the UK, I’ve taken every opportunity to explore and discover all that this country has to offer to international students, from sports to museums and art galleries. During Black History Month, I visited the International Slavery Museum in Liverpool. It was an incredible opportunity to learn more about the history of slavery and how the UK played a vital role in abolishing it.

As a young journalist with an interest in human rights it gave me great insights into the struggles of black people in the UK and their road to freedom.

A big football fan I couldn’t miss the chance to visit Anfield Stadium in Liverpool. Sport has always been a passion of mine and Liverpool FC is up there as one of my favourite clubs. The tour of the stadium allowed me to experience the energy of the Premier League, taking in both the history and success of the club in the football industry.

In Manchester, I had the chance to visit the art gallery, one of the most important cultural sites in the city and a Chevening bucket list location. I was captivated by its historical collections and the diverse range of exhibitions offered.

The museum’s collection includes artwork from various countries and continents, allowing me to fully immerse myself in a broad scope of work.

I’ve also made sure to explore the places most known tourists in London- King’s Cross Station, the British Museum, the Elizabeth Tower, and Tower Bridge. Every moment spent in these iconic locations has been a whirlwind of memories and fun.

But it doesn’t stop, there’s so much yet to explore – Scotland is next on my list!

Sharing my Chevening experience with others

The Chevening journey provides an incredible opportunity to build lasting friendships and networks and I want to make sure that I can share it with others, to showcase the Chevening experience.

I recently took part in a program led by my university, where international students and I learn new tools for creating content. This opportunity has allowed me to meet new students, faculty members and expand my professional and build on my skills in marketing and communications.

I want to use social media platforms to help others understand what it’s like to study in the UK. You can follow my Chevening journey, as well as other Social Media Ambassadors.

I’m hoping to participate in various events in the UK and dedicate some time to volunteering with different societies and organisations. I want to share these experiences with both the Chevening community and those aspiring to be part of the scholarship programme.

As a Chevening scholar it’s important to work hard, but also balance your scholarship with time out through exploring the UK, immersing yourself in the culture and building your network.
