As winter arrives in the UK, staying active and healthy can be challenging for Chevening scholars. This blog offers practical tips, from outdoor festive activities to indoor workouts, with advice from Chevening alumni who’ve already navigated a UK winter.

As winter arrives in the UK, it brings shorter days, colder temperatures, and the temptation to retreat indoors. For Chevening scholars, it can sometimes feel challenging to maintain an active and healthy lifestyle during the winter months, especially when balancing studying and homesickness. However, staying active—both physically and mentally—is essential for maintaining wellbeing, keeping the winter blues at bay, and making the most of your time in the UK. In this guide, we’ll explore practical ways to stay active and healthy during the colder months, and share tips from Chevening alumni who have already survived a UK winter!

Embrace the outdoors – even when it’s cold!

Winter in the UK might be chilly, but it’s also a time to embrace the festive season and take in the crisp winter air. Ria Natalia Butar shares valuable advice on how to enjoy the outdoors, even when the temperatures drop.

“Get outside and soak up the festive atmosphere! Explore Christmas markets, where you’ll find cozy stalls filled with seasonal treats, unique crafts, and warm drinks. Embrace the traditions, try mulled wine, indulge in mince pies, and enjoy the community spirit that fills the air during the holiday season. Make it a point to stay active. Even if it’s just a brisk walk or a short run, getting your body moving can do wonders for your mental health in the long run. Fresh air and exercise can lift your mood, reduce stress, and keep the winter blues at bay.”

Victoria Friss de Kereki agrees, highlighting the importance of making the most of the daylight hours.

“Yes, it does get dark early, but that’s even more reason to make the most of the hours of daylight you do have! Head out for a walk in the park or cosy up with a warm coffee or hot chocolate at a local café. A bit of fresh air can make a real difference in keeping your energy up.”

Winter markets, like those in London, Manchester, or Edinburgh, can be a wonderful excuse to get outside while also soaking in the unique charm of UK winters. Even a quick walk around these lively spots will lift your spirits and help you stay active!

Prepare for winter conditions

When the weather in the UK turns colder, safety and comfort become key when getting outside. Fatma Ayu offers some practical advice.

“Engaging in physical activity can improve circulation and maintain a healthy body temperature. Try taking quick walks or getting some exercise. Wear suitable footwear for winter—especially for icy conditions. Footwear that is both waterproof and has a high grip is necessary. Keep an eye out for icy spots on pavements to prevent slipping.”

Get creative with indoor workouts

If the weather’s too cold or wet for your liking, there are plenty of indoor options to keep moving. Iqbal Azis offers some down-to-earth advice for starting small.

“I just want to lie down; it’s too cold.” I felt the same when experiencing my first winter in the UK. However, staying active during the winter is necessary since it will help you improve your physical and mental well-being. Moving your body consistently and realistically is the key; it doesn’t have to be an intense full-body workout. Instead, you can start by climbing the stairs in your accommodation, dancing to your favourite song in your room, or maybe starting your yoga journey in the living room while catching the sun.”

Join a sports team or society

Engaging with others through group activities can not only help you stay active but also help combat any feelings of isolation that can arise during the winter months. Victoria Friss de Kereki shares this advice.

“Join a sports team or society at uni that interests you, and commit to attending all practices, meetings, and social gatherings. Not only will it keep you moving, but having regular activities to look forward to—and people to enjoy them with—will greatly help beat the winter blues.”

Prioritise mental health and wellbeing

The winter months in the UK can bring darker, shorter days, and for some, this can impact their mental health. To avoid feeling low or isolated, it’s essential to integrate activities that support your mental wellbeing. Victoria Friss de Kereki recommends day trips to explore the seasonal charm of the UK.

“Winter brings loads of seasonal activities, and many cities and towns turn into magical winter wonderlands. Day trips to see these are a great way to lift your spirits and enjoy the season’s unique charm! My personal favourites are Birmingham, Cardiff, and Edinburgh. Which will be yours?”

Thriving as a Chevening scholar

Staying active and healthy during the winter months in the UK doesn’t have to be difficult. Whether you prefer bundling up for a walk in the cold, joining a local fitness class, or exploring seasonal activities with fellow Chevening scholars, there are many ways to keep your body and mind in balance. By following the advice of your peers and prioritizing both physical activity and mental wellbeing, you can make the most of winter and enjoy your time as a Chevening scholar in the UK. So, embrace the season, stay active, and keep healthy, knowing that winter is just another opportunity to thrive.
