About to start your Chevening journey? Social Media Ambassador Sidhant Maharaj has some top tips to help you prepare.
‘If you’re about to start your Chevening journey in the UK, congratulations! Being selected is a remarkable achievement!
You’re about to embark on the journey of a lifetime. But while the excitement is palpable, the transition to life in the United Kingdom can also be daunting.
As a current Chevening scholar, I’d like to share some advice to help you make the most of your Chevening experience.
1. Start preparing early
The weeks and months leading up to your departure can be hectic. So, start preparing early to avoid any last-minute stresses. Ensure your travel documents are in order and that you have planned and researched your destination in the UK. There is heaps of content out there to help you navigate the UK.
2. Secure your accommodation early
Finding accommodation in the UK can be challenging, especially in popular cities like London, Edinburgh, and Manchester. Start searching early and consider various options around you. Student accommodation portals on your university website are great tools to help find and secure good accommodation. But be on the lookout for scams, and always verify the legitimacy of your rental agreement.
3. Plan your finances
Chevening provides a generous stipend, but it is essential to manage your finances wisely. Creating a budget that accounts for food, travel, rent, and other expenses will help you have a better experience.
Remember, the cost of living varies significantly between cities, and I highly recommend having a small emergency fund for unexpected expenses. You should also keep an eye out for student discounts; these are available for most things you do in the UK from the time you arrive.
4. Embrace the cultural diversity
The UK is a melting pot of cultures, offering a rich tapestry of experiences. Take this opportunity to immerse yourself in different cultures, whether it is through university events, local festivals, or just simply by connecting with people from diverse backgrounds. This will help you broaden your perspectives all while helping you build a global network of friends and professionals.
5. Engage with the Chevening community and build a support network
One of the best parts of the Chevening experience is the community you become part of.
Attend Chevening events and workshops and connect with fellow scholars and alumni through social media and networking events. This network will provide you with support, professional connections, and friendships that last a lifetime.
Your university’s international student office is also a great place for assistance. And joining clubs and societies at your university is a great way to meet new people and enrich your experience.
6. Plan your academic journey
While it is important that you enjoy your time in the UK, it is equally important that you stay organised and keep up with your coursework and course requirements.
Develop good study habits and time management skills to achieve a healthy balance that maximises both your learning and personal growth. And take advantage of the resources your university provides, such as libraries, academic workshops, and seminars.
7. Explore the UK
There’s a lot to juggle as a Chevening scholar, but don’t forget to take some time to explore the UK and enjoy all that it has to offer.
The UK is home to a wealth of historical and cultural sites, scenic landscapes, and vibrant cities.
Plan trips to iconic places like Edinburgh, London, Cambridge, and Brighton, and take in the natural beauty of places like the Lake District and the Scottish Highlands.
Travelling in the UK can be quite affordable if you plan ahead and take advantage of student discounts.
8. Embrace the experience
Finally, embrace every moment of this incredible journey. Attend lectures, join clubs, volunteer, and engage with the community.
The Chevening Scholarship is a unique opportunity to grow academically, professionally, and personally.
This year will pass quickly, but the experiences you gain will shape your future in profound ways. Be proactive in seeking out opportunities and make the most of this life-changing experience.
I’ll finish simply by saying welcome to the Chevening family, and congratulations once again on becoming a Chevening scholar. Your adventure is just beginning; make the most of every moment… the possibilities are endless!’
